You might have heard the term ‘regenerative farming’ recently and wondered what on earth it’s about. The subject caught our attention too, ever since watching an episode of Clarkson’s Farm, in which Jeremy takes advice on growing sustainable produce from ex Groove Armada frontman, Andy Cato. Andy is one of the founders of Wildfarmed, a B-Corp organisation leading the revolution in regenerative farming.
Regenerative Farming refers to a new farming model centred around working harmoniously with nature to grow our produce, rather than using chemicals and pesticides that destroy the soil and biodiversity of the land. In Wildfarmed’s own words, it is “farming with nature, not against it, to leave the land better, not worse”.
Natural Biodiversity
You’ll notice in this picture of wheat growing at Wildfarmed HQ that wild flowers have been planted around the edge of the crop and amongst it too. To quote Andy, that’s because “nature doesn’t do monocultures; it loves a party.” The goal here is to create biodiversity, encouraging a wide range of wildlife that in the long run helps keep the soil healthy and robust, so that crops can be grown year after year without the use of chemicals. Healthy soil also traps in carbon, which is obviously much better for the environment.
Farming for the future.
This Wildfarmed illustration paints a grim picture of the future if we carry on farming under the current model. We have started using regeneratively grown flour and oats in many of our bakes to help turn the tide. If you want to find out more about regenerative farming and Wildfarmed, please see their website.
